Overview
ISO/IEC 42001 is the first international AI management system (AIMS) standard. It follows the same structure as ISO 27001, applied to the responsible development and use of AI.
Purpose
Help organizations govern AI systematically — managing risks and opportunities across the AI lifecycle while addressing trustworthiness concerns such as fairness, transparency, and safety.
Architecture
Like ISO 27001, it pairs management-system clauses with an Annex of AI-specific controls and implementation guidance, plus references to AI impact assessment.
Core Concepts
- AI management system (AIMS) — the governance structure for AI.
- AI impact assessment — evaluating effects on individuals, groups, and society.
Cloud Mapping
Controls for data governance, logging, and access apply to managed AI/ML platforms (Amazon SageMaker, Azure ML, Google Vertex AI) and to model and dataset access controls.
